SURJ Northland December Public Meeting

On December 6th we will be meeting to continue building a movement of anti-racist white people in the Northland! We will be creating space to share with one another how we are doing in the aftermath of the elections, unpack the characteristics of white supremacy culture and how we can upturn them in our own lives and communities, and collectively analyze the way power upholds racist systems. We hope that you can join us!

Our vision is that these public meetings can help us all to:

  1. Create and sustain the nourishing relationships necessary for the long-term fight against racism
  2. Develop a shared language and analysis, which will make us more effective in ending racism
  3. Build skills and capacity needed for interrupting racist moments and conversations, and for engaging in multi-racial organizing without doing more harm than good
  4. Take collective action and build a long-term sustained presence of white folks working in solidarity with people of color and indigenous communities to resist racism and dismantle white supremacy

Weekly Standing Rock Information Meeting & Vigil

SURJ Northland is hosting weekly information meetings and vigils every Friday at 5:00 PM at Peace United Church of Christ in Duluth. This week, as every week, we will host a conversation about the current situation at Standing Rock, answer any questions the group may have, and share reflections from our indigenous partners. At 5:30 PM we will move into a time of candle-light and silence.

The All Nations Indigenous Center has asked that we share our prayers for the spiritual strength of the water protectors. We will invite people to share from their hearts at this time. We do this intentionally to create space to share our emotions, not just our thoughts, and to do emotional labor together. It is our belief that this makes use stronger to show up for movement work.

People of any faith welcome.

SURJ Northland August Potluck

Join us on August 17th to connect with other white folks who are interested in racial justice work, and learn about the SURJ model and how to get involved. This is the third of three potlucks/open houses that are planned for the summer. In the fall we plan to start regular monthly meetings to build skills and a shared language around race and racism. Please spread the word!

We will be:

  • Sharing more about the model and what we mean by "movement building"
  • Exploring our role as white people in context of the Twin Ports
  • Inviting everyone to deeper accountability/relationship with one another as we go forward doing this important work!

SURJ Northland is a new collective of white people in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin who envision a world without institutional racism, white privilege, and systemic violence against communities of color. SURJ stands for Showing Up for Racial Justice.

We aim to be a long-term presence in the Northland, educating and organizing white people to (1) understand their stake in ending racism, and to (2) organize with and in support of people of color-led movements for racial justice. We are about helping our community build skills, create a shared language and vocabulary to talk about racism, and take real action that leads to sustained social change. We support the self-determination of people of color, and honor their leadership. SURJ Northland is affiliated with SURJ, a national network of groups and individuals who are organizing white people to act for racial justice.

We are just getting started, and we'd love for you to join us!

On June 23rd SURJ Northland held its first-ever public gathering: a potluck at Peace UCC in Duluth. It was an incredibly inspiring evening!  If you weren't able to make it, don't worry, there will be more opportunities to connect. We plan to host two more get-to-know-you potlucks this summer (details below), as a way for anyone who is interested to connect, and learn more about our work. We hope that you can join, whether you were able to make it to the June potluck, or are completely new to SURJ!  And if you have any other questions, feel free to contact us (info@surjnorthland.org). We're always happy to meeting one-on-one with anyone who is interested. Please share this invitation with those you think might be interested!
