How can you show up for racial justice?

An important part of SURJ Northland is collective decision-making. Understanding who is part of the collective decision-making, who is showing up to do actions but can’t commit to more relationship building to become part of the team collective, and who is interested in leadership roles is important, both for individual members and for the rest of the group.

Within SURJ Northland, there are 3 member layers:

  • SURJ Supporter

  • Active Member

  • Member Leaders

SURJ Supporter

Interested in supporting the work; yet aren’t able to commit to ongoing meetings or cohorts

  • Attend a 60-90 minute orientation and potentially quarterly all-SURJ meetings

  • Understand and support the SURJ Values

  • Pay membership dues once established

  • Attend at least 1 SURJ Northland event/action per year

Active Member

These members have a bit more time they are able to commit, and are interested in participating in events, actions, and/or outreach. These members do all of the elements of the SURJ Supporter layer PLUS:

  • Identify as a SURJ Northland member

  • Can name SURJ Northland accountability partners (once formalized)

  • Can describe the organizational structure of SURJ Northland

  • Attend 2 events per year. Volunteer at least 1 time per year at a SURJ event.

  • Are an active member of a SURJ team.

  • Complete their social justice ecosystem roles

Member Leaders

These members have decided to make a more in-depth commitment to the work of SURJ Northland. They are taking on more responsibility inside and outside of SURJ Northland. These members do all of the elements of the Active layer PLUS:

  • Have participated in a cohort (or have been an Active Member of a Base Building/Sustaining or Mobilization team for 6 months and have the recommendation of current team leaders).

  • Help lead organization of SURJ Northland events and actions.

  • Commit to leadership roles within the SURJ Northland structure.

  • Attend at least 1 skill-building training per year.

Ready to take the next step?

First, you’ll have to attend orientation. Click HERE to go to our calendar and sign up for the next one that’s scheduled.

Already attended an orientation? Great! Fill out THIS FORM to let us know where you’d like to plug in.

A note regarding finances - we don’t currently have dues. We are figuring that out (and will do it in consultation with teams and on a sliding scale). Along with any dues or other fundraising for SURJ, we encourage folks to donate an equal or greater amount to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) organizations in the Twin Ports. Suggestions might include AICHO or Family Freedom Center, or any other BIPOC-led organization you are aware of.
